Directions to the SPARE Shelter and Clinic
The SPARE shelter is located on the Saqqara Road, about 20 minutes from
downtown Cairo, depending on the traffic. It is not difficult to find,
but if you are not sure you can find it, call the Shelter for more
specific details (381-3855). If you are taking a taxi and you do not
speak Arabic, tell the taxi driver “Saqqara Road--Shubramant.”
Shubramant is the name of the area on the Saqqara Road that the shelter
is located in. If you have a mobile phone, you can even call the
Shelter from your taxi and a SPARE employee will explain to the taxi
driver the directions.
From Maadi or Giza, get on the Mounib
Bridge so that you are driving in the direction of the Pyramids. You
are on the Ring Road. Continue on this highway, passing the police
station in the median, and you will soon see the Giza pyramids off to
the right in front of you. As you get closer to the Mariotiyya canal,
which will be perpendicular in front of you, you will see an exit off
the Ring Road to the right before the canal. DO NOT take this first
exit. Cross the canal and take the exit immediately to your right,
which will curve down around so that you are on the Saqqara Road
heading in the direction of Shubramant and the Saqqara Pyramids. Stay
on this road for about 15 minutes. You will pass Restaurant Andrea on
the right, and then soon come to the restaurant called Al-Dar. You will
soon see the tall minaret of a mosque on the corner to the right, and
you want to turn right at that intersection. There are several road
signs at the intersection, including one for SPARE and marking the
street of the home of Ahmed Farraj. Just 100 meters down on your right
is the entrance to SPARE, which is a large yellow gate and the entire
front of the property is lined by flowers. Ring the bell, and welcome!
